Kris Thornton is a highly passionate and talented photographer who loves all aspects of photography and is experienced in a wide variety of photography genres.   Kris’s love of photography started in a high school yearbook class where he learned to capture candid moments and be creative. After high school, Kris moved to southern California where he started college courses and learned landscape and film photography, along with the concepts of composition and light. Over the next decade Kris took every opportunity to learn as much as he could about the theories of photography from reading dozens of books, countless hours of online classes, workshops, and most of all working alongside other photographers to learn the trade of wedding and portrait photography, as well as the importance and power of light in creating images.  In 2005, Kris went back to college to finish his Liberal Arts degree, with a concentration in visual arts and music. During this time Kris had the opportunity to become the primary theatrical photographer for a community college, a university, and two separate theater houses, capturing dance, theater and musical productions. It was here that Kris realized his first official publication with a photo of the opening scene of Sweeney Todd appearing in Vogue Italia.

In 2015, Kris and his family moved to Fredericksburg where they have settled in as part of the community. Over the last five years, Kris has had the pleasure of managing the Richmond Camera store in Fredericksburg as well as continuing to grow his own business, Kris Thornton Photography.  He continued his advancement in learning more photography than ever, as well as moving into the role of teacher with classes offered one-on-one and classroom style. Over this time, Kris has participated in multiple photography competitions and received both national and international publications and awards. One of his most cherished is placing 2nd out of over 70 thousand entries in the nation, for Nature Conservancy magazine.

When working with customers, Kris has the ability to approach any session and immediately understand what needs to be done to capture and provide the highest quality of images. Though he mainly focuses on commercial photography such as corporate, products, and food, he has photographed dozens of families, weddings, and seniors and always looks forward to every session and giving the customer his undivided attention.

In 2020 Kris and his wife Kim decided to take the next step and start the process of opening a studio. The perfect opportunity presented itself in the form of the previous owner of Hartwood Photography in downtown Fredericksburg deciding to retire.  Kris and Kim decided to purchase Hartwood Photography, blending it with Kris Thornton Photography and creating what is now Studio KT.
